275 Challenge 2020-06-17T15:14:32-04:00

As the world changes daily in the midst of the COVID-19 health crisis, The LGBT Community Center in New York City continues to adapt to meet the needs of the most vulnerable LGBTQ New Yorkers. Many in our community need The Center now more than ever, and requests for our services are increasing every day, including from those who rely on us for HIV and AIDS support services.

Our community members’ health and safety is always our top priority, which is why we have made the tough call not to proceed with our annual Cycle for the Cause on-the-road Ride in September. But we still need the Cycle for the Cause community to keep our work going. We’re asking the community to rally around The Center a little sooner and a little differently this year to make sure that we are meeting the needs of LGBTQ New Yorkers right now.

We are excited to announce Cycle for the Cause: The 275 Challenge Virtual Ride on Saturday, July 18!

The 275 Challenge is a virtual endurance experience for you to test yourself physically for 275 minutes in digital solidarity with one another, while raising funds for The Center. Participants are encouraged to cycle, indoors (or, where safe, on the road) for four hours and 35 minutes, logging as many miles as possible (of course with some breaks!). Alternatively, you can choose to walk, run, bake or do anything you choose for 275 minutes or 275 repetitions—whatever works for you! This challenge is built for Riders and Crew, individuals and teams, people of any age or ability, no matter where you are!

We’ll provide the tools you need to fundraise, as well as support with planning your personal 275 Challenge experience. Throughout the virtual event on July 18, there will be opportunities to experience your favorite parts of the Ride, including an opening ceremony, rest stops, pickles, PB&Js and your favorite C4C celebrities, all from home. We will come together at the end for a closing ceremony to celebrate all you have achieved!

Registration is now $0 and there are no fundraising minimums. Register today for C4C: The 275 Challenge and begin your fundraising!

We’re so excited to support you in the coming weeks and see you on the virtual road. We have no doubt that this community is going to do something huge to help all LGBTQ New Yorkers impacted by COVID-19, especially our friends and family living with HIV and AIDS, just as we have for 25 years. Let’s do this, Cycle Family!

What are you waiting for?

Register for The 275 Challenge today and help The Center end AIDS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Cycle for the Cause not being hosted in-person as planned for September 2020? 2020-05-15T12:43:21-04:00

To protect the health and safety of our community, and given the logistics of Cycle for the Cause (shared hotels, multiple state permits, etc.), we will sadly not be able to move forward with our annual event in-person. We have instead reimagined C4C to ensure we are still supporting The Center as best as we can to bring critical support to the thousands of LGBTQ people who rely on The Center’s services, now more than ever.

Will the in-person Ride be rescheduled? 2020-05-15T12:42:50-04:00

Due to the complexity of coordinating all of the hotel venues, vendors, volunteers, etc. that are involved with this event, we are not able to reschedule the physical Ride to another weekend. We are excited about our reimagined 275 Challenge where we can continue to raise funds for The Center and come together virtually on July 18.

What is the Cycle for the Cause: The 275 Challenge? 2020-05-15T12:42:08-04:00

The 275 Challenge is a virtual endurance experience for you to test yourself physically for 275 minutes. Participants are encouraged to cycle indoors (or, where safe, on the road) for four hours and 35 minutes. You can also choose to walk, run, bake or do anything you choose for 275 minutes or 275 repetitions—whatever works for you!

Why is the virtual C4C: The 275 Challenge being scheduled for July 18? 2020-05-15T12:41:35-04:00

This is a critical time for The Center, and we need your help urgently. The demand for our services for the LGBTQ community has substantially increased, yet The Center had to cancel several critical fundraisers since March that would normally fund that work. We picked July to give you just enough time to plan your 275 Challenge, recruit your friends and family to join your team and fundraise. We know we can count on our community to answer the call and rise to the occasion.

I was already registered for Cycle for the Cause in September and am ready to take part in the 275 Challenge. Do I need to do anything with my registration page? 2020-05-15T12:41:05-04:00

No, you are all set! In fact, all default copy on your fundraising page has been adjusted to support your virtual effort during this critical time. This includes a description of the 275 Challenge and what you are asking donors to support, and provides guidance to ensure an empathetic approach to fundraising given the circumstances of COVID-19. Log in to take a look and get started. If you personalized your page with your own text, that has not yet been altered. Please check out our samples and update your own story.

I was signed up to Crew in September…what now? 2020-05-15T12:40:17-04:00

The great part of a virtual event is that anyone can participate in whatever way challenges them (and that is fun and impactful!). That includes our amazing and beloved Crew! 275 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for their local hospital, anyone? 275 minutes of walking in a rest stop costume in your neighborhood? There are plenty of options for crew to explore. And you know we can’t do this without you!

I was already signed up for Cycle for the Cause in September. Will my registration fee be refunded? 2020-05-15T12:39:45-04:00

While your registration fee was non refundable, it was also originally not tax deductible. We are now able to convert your fee into a donation, which is fully tax deductible, and officially counts towards your fundraising goal (and our awesome incentive rewards). Thank you for this important contribution.

What resources are available to me and my team to support my 275 Challenge effort? 2020-05-15T12:39:14-04:00

Log in to your participant center or head directly to your participant resource portal and take a look at all of the resources we’ve created to help you reach your goals, including email templates, social media graphics and copy, and more. We’ll keep adding materials as we get closer to July 18.

Can I continue fundraising and have it count toward my total? 2020-05-15T12:38:43-04:00

Absolutely! We are grateful to have your continued support, and the LGBTQ community and those living with HIV and AIDS are, quite frankly, relying on it. Log in to your online fundraising center here.

How do I turn in checks I’ve received? 2020-05-15T12:38:05-04:00

You may still mail them to: The Center, Attn: Cycle for the Cause, 208 W. 13th Street, New York, NY 10011. Please feel free to give us a heads up at cycleforthecause@gaycenter.org.

Funds must be received by July 31 to be counted toward The 275 Challenge fundraising prizes. Please do not send cash, and ensure your first and last name are noted clearly with your checks.

What is the fundraising deadline for C4C: The 275 Challenge? 2020-05-15T12:37:33-04:00

With the event on July 18, the fundraising deadline in order to earn incentive prizes is July 31, though please feel free to continue to raise funds through the year on your participant page.

Are there still fundraising incentives for The 275 Challenge? 2020-05-15T12:36:56-04:00

Yes! We’re excited to offer even more incentives for all participants this year if they raise over $275. Click here to check them out! Note the deadline on earning all incentives is July 31. For those that earn the $275 reward t-shirt by the end of June, they will receive this prior to our virtual event date of July 18.

Will I still receive my $5K or $10K jersey if I fundraise to either of those amounts? 2020-05-15T12:36:01-04:00

Unfortunately, due to the high costs and production logistics for fundraising jerseys, we will not be sending those out at the $5K and $10K levels. Our new incentives for those levels are pretty great though—check them out!

When can I register for next year’s event? 2020-05-15T12:34:56-04:00

Please visit cycleforthecause.org and stay tuned for announcements about events happening in 2021. We look forward to coming back together as a community in person.
